Treasures from The Sea - Collection
This collection was born from my fascination of the ocean and sea life. All of these unique and one of a kind jewelry pieces are hand made, using natural corals, gold and some diamonds to accentuate the beauty, richness and the exotic quality of each creation.
Coral is soft compared to most gems. It ranges from semi-transparent to opaque, with no crystal structure. Its toughness is fair to good, and its polish is waxy to vitreous. Coral’s earliest known use in jewelry dates back 30,000 years. In addition to using coral ornamentally, ancient people attribute magical powers to it. Among other benefits, coral was thought to protect its wearer from death. First-century Romans used it to ward off evil and to impart wisdom. it is still worn in modern-day Italy as protect against the “evil eye” and as a cure for sterility.
All the black corals I used in these collection are from the Caribbean Coast of Colombia. They were harvested 80 feet below the ocean’s surface by my father, Alfonso Suarez. After I saw this amazing material, my father and I began to give it form, and we fell in love with it.
